Directed by Robert Rodriguez

United States 1998 104 mins.

Robert Rodriguez’s 1998 high school alien invasion/sci-fi pastiche often draws comparisons to body-invasion science fiction like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing, but it is The Faculty’s consistently witty, self-aware tone (not uncommon to Rodriguez’ films) that elevates it beyond a simple thematic rehashing. The plot follows an ensemble of the usual high-school types, but its primary focus is on the outcasts Casey Connor (Elijah Wood) and Stokley Mitchell (Clea DuVall). The two must band together with the other high school social highlights when they discover that their teachers may not have the best of intentions—and that everyone who goes to the principal’s office comes back a little too in-step.

The Northwest Film Center recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands. These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River. We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities—past, present, future—and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
