Directed by Annabel Jankel, Rocky Morton

United States, United Kingdom 1993 104 mins. In English

Directed by the husband and wife team of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel (co-creators of the 1980s sensation Max Headroom), this extremely loose adaptation of the beloved Nintendo video game franchise quickly spins out of the realm of normal and into gonzo surrealism, groping (sometimes desperately) to assemble a fantastical backstory into a contiguous plotline. The result is a strange, stylized adventure heavily steeped in 1990s apocalyptic/industrial imagery. Starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, and Samantha Mathis, and narrated by Dan Castellaneta (AKA the voice of Homer Simpson!), Super Mario Bros. is a wild and singular ride, a marvel of aesthetic excess and questionable, but fascinating, choices.

The Northwest Film Center recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands. These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River. We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities—past, present, future—and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
