Directed by Sarah Jacobson

United States 1996 98 mins.

Sarah Jacobson’s Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore is the DIY, grimy, nineties girl’s POV on the coming-of-age teen romance. Occasionally nakedly earnest enough to sound like an after-school special on how girls really feel about sex (“it gets better!”), the film follows the eponymous Jane in the wake of losing her virginity, as she warms back up to boys and deals with the jerks at her work—all with the help and shared experiences of her friends.

“Sarah Jacobson’s only feature film is a vibrant and vital antidote to every phony Hollywood teen picture. It brings lo-fi realness to the coming-of-age genre, and it mostly takes place in a repertory movie theater! First job, first time, crushes, friendships, fitting in, and figuring it out—all are handled with utter honesty.”—Alicia Coombs

The Northwest Film Center recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands. These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River. We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities—past, present, future—and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
