Of all of the enigmatic loners gracing the filmography of charismatic actor and philanthropist Paul Newman (Hud, The Hustler’s Fast Eddie Felson, Hombre’s John Russell), none may be as iconic as the titular character of Cool Hand Luke.  After being sentenced to two years on a Florida chain gang, Newman’s Luke consistently refuses to obey authority—be it the pecking order between his fellow prisoners or the commands of the prison wardens. After gradually earning the respect and camaraderie of his fellow inmates, Luke’s anti-establishment compulsions turn towards one purpose: escape. Allegorical in its themes and imagery and famous for its dialogue (“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate!”), Cool Hand Luke is ultimately unforgettable thanks to Newman’s magnetic presence as one of cinema’s most enduring iconoclasts.
