2018 105 mins.

Presenting the parallels between society and the fashion industry, A Perfect 14 examines the segregation plus-size models face as they work to reshape the fashion industry and society’s beauty standards. Director Vargas follows three successful models who simultaneously struggle against the distorted perceptions of body image in the fashion industry. Employing the power of social media, the models find a place for themselves away from the rejection of the mainstream, and quietly start a revolution as a plus-size fashion subculture emerges—including new fashion magazines that showcase the latest trends while providing a place for plus-size models to represent themselves. A Perfect 14 is co-presented with Portland Fashion Week, who, according to Vogue, was the first fashion week to showcase plus apparel as a stand-alone, in 2005. Come early for a reception and stay for a post-screening question and answer with director Giovanna Morales Vargas and Producer James O’Brien.

The Northwest Film Center recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands. These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River. We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities—past, present, future—and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
