Fundraising and distribution have never been more interwoven (and more interdependent) ecosystems than in today’s independent filmmaking universe. This seminar brings the film community together for shared learning and best practices related to private investors, crowdfunding, tax incentives, selling to new and emerging markets, and marketing the project at every stage of development. Presentations by those in the know—accompanied by case studies of active projects—will lay out the challenges and opportunities. Whether you have a project in mind or are already considering your options for a work-in-progress, this is a conversation and community-building moment you do not want to miss. Q&A will be extensive.

Presenters include attorney John Cones, producer Nick Maniatis, director and producers Gary and Anne Lundgren, Jon Betz and James-Michael Boyer of Collective Eye Films, Liz Cook Mowe of Kickstarter, and distribution strategist Mia Bruno.

9:30 am – Film Financing 101: Legal Investment Options for the Indie Feature Film

Attorney John Cones lays out the fundamentals for low-budget projects and defines the requirements by law for passive and active investing.

11:00 am – Making the Most of Tax Incentives

Producer Nick Maniatis shares his insights into this often-overlooked money-saving opportunity and how it can significantly stretch dollars.


1:00 pm – Case Study: Independent Feature Film Phoenix, Oregon

Writer/Director Gary Lundgren and Producer Anne Lundgren describe their winning approaches to investors, tax incentives, and distribution. 

2:00 pm – Working with a Distributor

Collective Eye Films’ Jon Betz (director: SEED) and James-Michael Boyer outline DIY and hybrid options for reaching educational markets highlighting the case study of PRICED OUT (director: Cornelius Swart).

Liz Cook Mowe outlines best practices in crowd-funding, focusing on the Kickstarter ecosystem, and shares case studies of successful campaigns with guest filmmakers in attendance.

11:00 am – Crowdfunding Case Studies – Marq Evan’s film Welcome to My Daydream: A Documentary about Will Vinton, and Dru Holley’s film The Buffalo Soldiers of the Pacific Northwest

John Cones is an attorney, author and lecturer based in Eugene ( Nick Maniatis is a producer and the former head of the New Mexico Film Commission. Gary Lundgren and Anne Lundgren have produced three low-budget feature films in Southern Oregon. Jon Betz is the Collective Eye Films Director of Distribution and the  award-winning filmmaker of the documentary SEED. James-Michael Boyer is the Collective Eye Films Head of Marketing & Sales. Liz Cook Mowe is part of the documentary team at Kickstarter. Mia Bruno is the former Head of Acquisition for Gravitas Ventures and now serves as a film marketing and distribution strategist.
