Expanded Cinema: Apparatus and Methodology

March 4, 2017 — March 4, 2017

Saturday | 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. with short lunch break

Instructor: Alex Mackenzie

Location: Classes & Admin Offices

Product Description

Let’s demystify the primary instrument of motion picture viewing, the projector, and play with its potential to both define and subvert the cinema audience experience. Taking as inspiration the concepts and practice of Expanded Cinema, and focusing on 16mm projection devices specifically, the workshop will demonstrate and discuss the various elements of projection – light, lens, focal plane, film gate, speed, shutter, motor, bulb and screen – and how various contemporary and historical media artists have used them as creative tools which challenge ideas of conventional projection. Participants will then have the opportunity to work hands-on with several types of projectors, working with gels, lenses, mirrors, glass and dimmer switches to test out and become comfortable with loading and manipulating the apparatus. Practical information on acquisition and maintenance will also be covered.

Class limited to 10 participants.

On Thursday, March 2, Alex Mackenzie will perform one of his latest pieces, Apparations. For more info, click here.
