DIRECTOR: Marcelo Gomes
BRAZIL
In 1942, in the middle of Northeastern Brazil, two very different men meet along the road: Johann, an aspirin salesman avoiding the German draft, and Ranulpho, a rural Brazilian seeking escape from the drought. Johann's job is to visit isolated communities, setting up screens to show aspirin commercials—the locals' only chance to see anything approaching the magic of cinema. Although their personalities and lives are worlds apart, the two men develop a deep friendship, as Johann, in an effort to provide Ranulpho with job skills, teaches Ranulpho to run the film projector and drive the truck. In this evocative road movie, Gomes reminds us that war is as close as Johann's radio, broadcasting its relentless warnings that all lives are changed when the world is in conflict. This year's Brazilian submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. ( 99 min )
