Blessed By Fire
DIRECTOR: Tristán Bauer
ARGENTINA
Tristán Bauer's moving film explores the difficult legacy of the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands war, Argentina's ill–fated conflict with Britain in 1982. Following the defeat, the government insisted that the combatants commit to a pact of silence. Based on a memoir by a veteran still haunted by his harrowing memories of battle and deprivation, the story begins more than 20 years after the fighting as Esteban, a journalist, receives word that Vargas, one of his former pals has attempted suicide. Esteban's visit to his comrade revives long repressed memories of a time in hell and the lasting scars of military madness. Shot in part on the Islands' desolate and still heavily mined shores, Blessed By Fire is the first Argentine feature to assess and question the country's decision to fight and has been seen by more than four million people in Argentine cinemas. Special Jury Prize, San Sebastián Film Festival and Best Narrative Feature, Tribeca Film Festival. ( 100 min )

Filmography: After the Storm (90), Evita: The Unquiet Grave (97), The Books and the Night (99).

Chronicle of An Escape
DIRECTOR: Adrián Caetano
ARGENTINA
Based on a true story, Chronicle of an Escape is a suspenseful retelling of the 1977 –government–sponsored kidnapping of Argentine soccer player Claudio Tamburrini. Adapted from his autobiographical novel, "Pase Libre," the film chronicles Tamburrini's (Rodrigo de la Serna of Motorcycle Diaries) initial abduction by a mysterious group and subsequent stay at a terrifying detention center where he and several other young suspected leftist terrorists were subject to four months of imprisonment and torture before taking a desperate bid for freedom. Eschewing political agenda for the psychological dimensions of the story, this taut thriller explores the grueling relationship between executioner and victim forged when torrents of abuse and the will for survival clash. ( 103 min )

Filmography: Pizza, Beer, Cigarettes (98), Bolivia (01), A Red Bear (02).
