FAQs

Since its inception in 1973, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival (formerly the Northwest Film & Video Festival) has attracted a unique breed of filmmaker that challenges the status quo of the cinematic landscape and introduces new ideas in filmmaking to enthusiastic audiences, both at its home in Portland, Ore. and across the country through the Best of the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival Tour. The films selected for this year’s Tour cannot properly express the breadth of talent in our region, but we hope that it will whet your appetite and encourage you to seek out and appreciate visionary work wherever you can find it.

FAQs About the Tour

Q: What is the Best of the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival Tour?
A: The Best of the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival Tour is a collection of work distilled from the Festival, which occurs each November. The films are compiled onto a DVD and sent to colleges, museums, theaters, and community centers. The Tour allows communities that might otherwise have no access to independent film to experience a film festival in their own city, and generates income for the artists represented.

Q: What is the Northwest Film Center?
A: We are a non-profit media arts resource center in Portland, Ore. We are the producers of the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival and the distributors of the Tour.

Q: How do I book the Tour?
A: As a venue owner, programmer, or booking agent, you can book the Tour for any date. You will pay the Northwest Film Center a negotiated fee for the use of the Tour, and you are permitted to charge any amount you wish for admission. We will provide you with the Tour DVD, along with printed promotional materials. After the screening, return the films and unused materials to the Northwest Film Center with a screening report.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Booking fees for the Tour are negotiable and are based on the capacity of your venue and your ability to pay. Contact thomas@nwfilm.org for more details.

Q: How much should a venue charge for admission?
A: We defer to the venue to decide how much to charge for admission to the screening.

Q: Where does the money go?
A: Fees collected from the Tour are divided evenly amongst the artists on the Tour once expenses are deducted.

Q: My venue does not normally show films. What kind of equipment do I need?
A: All a venue needs to screen the Tour is a screen, video projector, and DVD player.

Q: Will the Film Center help to promote the screening?
A: We will work closely with you to make sure that your screening is as successful as it can be and we can help you to write a press release to ensure that your local media covers the event.

Q: Are the filmmakers available to come to the screening at my venue?
A: Often we can make visiting artist arrangements with available filmmakers. Festival Director Thomas Phillipson is also generally available to accompany the Tour and answer questions and/or host a workshop titled: “Getting Your Films Into Festivals.”

Q: I like some films on the Tour, but not others. Can I select individual films and screen them?
A: No. The Northwest Film Center is only authorized to distribute the films on the Tour in the context of the Tour.

Q: Who pays for shipping?
A: The Northwest Film Center will cover shipping to your venue. You are responsible for returning the Tour and all unused promotional materials immediately following the screening.
