DEAD TECH: ALIVE! Monday, March 14, 2011 6:30 P to 9:30 P Between planned obsolescence and the eternal rush of progress, the height of technology today will seem quaint tomorrow. It’s easy to forget that entire airlines were run on computers less sophisticated than today’s consumer-grade laptops, and some of the most enduring cinematic art was made with the junkshop finds of our day. Vital and exciting art can still be coaxed from toys—the disposable, the obsolete. Konefsky will provide an overview of how contemporary filmmakers are using old technology as an aesthetic tool, screening works that utilize “dead” formats to great effect. He will then demonstrate rare toy cameras—including Tyco VideoCam, Mattel Vidster, and the cherished Fisher-Price PixelVision—from his vast Albuquerque collection! Participants are welcome to bring in a favorite—or simply mysterious—old camera or sound recorder to share with the group. TUITION: $10 http://www.nwfilm.org/school/classes/term/112/ |
