HEDDA GABLER
Paul Willis/Seattle, WA

HEDDA GABLER is an incisive experimental adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen play from writer-director Paul Willis, whose own stage production with Printer's Devil Theatre in Seattle played to widespread acclaim in 2000. The film and stage versions were developed simultaneously, allowing the process of producing each version to inform the other. Willis transposes the story to a contemporary setting in a scorching Eastern Washington, where Hedda and her newlywed husband, a university professor, attempt to unpack their lives in a state of confusion and tension. A romantic rival from the past returns, forcing Hedda down a path of deception as she faces her desire for a life lived beautifully and without compromise—whatever the cost. (87 mins.)
